Big Bad and super OLD SCHOOL – This is the Chardonnay you make that you shouldn’t really make, we made it …just because we can!
Every year in the vineyard there is always one particular varietal that shines, this wine is recognition of that. The volumes are tiny We make only two barrels worth, individually number each bottle, and have an artist design the label, needless to say the wine speaks to them to assist in this process. In 2014 it was Chardonnay.
Golden Straw, green-hued colour, youthful in appearance. The nose is big, its bold, you are presented with aromas of ripe stone-fruit and tropicals with spice and cedar and butter, oh the butter. This has good depth and intensity that builds in the glass, revealing stoney minerals and rich-mealy notes, spices and vanilla with the oak with resinous nuances. Full bodied, plush and juicy fruit flavours of nectarines and grapefruit are the feature on the palate. The fruit is supported by fine-grained texture and softly drying structure, balancing the fruit sweetness. Layers of spice, fruit, citrus and balanced oak unfold to lend detail and interest. The mouthfeel is balanced and well-proportioned, and the flavours are carried to a sustained finish. This is a rich-fruited and boldly textured and structured Chardonnay. Match with roasted white meats and hard cheeses over the next 6-8+ years. 100% mendoza Chardonnay from the Gimblett Road vineyard, fermented to 14.5% alc., the wine aged 24 months in 100% new French oak. 600 bottles made only. Each Bottle individually numbered.
